Isaac Newton once wrote to a friend, “if I have seen further, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants.” Every year on the first Sunday of November, we remember the giants on whose shoulders we stand. We mark the lives of saints, “those of deathless fame as well as those whose names are known only to” God as the liturgy says. In doing so, we commit ourselves to the values these saints have represented and we look deep into the future so that others too may stand on our shoulders.
